Everybody wants to rule the world
There has been an observable change in the nature of society in the last decade or so. With the rise of 24/7 news reporting from around the world, social media access, and overall growing connectedness, many have lost sight of their role in the world.
For our ancestors there was primarily a focus on family and the local community, with limited access to anything outside of that. Few were of the mindset that it was even within their grasp to "change the world.” Today it seems that the goal of most graduating college students is to take that on - to change the world. It isn't apparent that individuals believe that they will single-handedly accomplish this goal, but they do find their identity group and believe that together they will change this world for the better.
You may ask what's so wrong with that goal or with believing in the betterment of society. For those in the past who recognized their role in society and understood what was within their control, there was a way of life that entailed personal responsibility and accountability. Now it seems that the "world changers" have a lack of understanding of what is within their control and they seek to change things that are not in their control. This leads not to personal responsibility, but to trying to control everyone else. "You can't say that." "You're going to get canceled." New laws, new policies, new societal norms. Instead of focusing on what you believe to be right, you insist that everyone else must also communicate only what you believe to be right. Instead of living the life you believe to be correct, you demand that everyone else in society also be required to live that way.
Dissent is punished. Free thinking is vilified. The allowable opinion on any subject is shrinking. Discourse and debate are disappearing. And it's because we went from thinking that changing the world meant living a good life to believing that it means forcing everyone else to live life according to our views.
The Stoics lived their lives under the principle that the only thing you can control is yourself. Your thoughts. Your emotions. Your actions. You are not in control of someone else's thoughts, emotions, or actions; no matter how hard you try. If more people took this into consideration; we’d spend less time trying to change the world and more time living as good people. That, interestingly enough, would change the world.
