Have you ever had one of those conversations that sticks with you for years? You’re just living life, minding your own business and you’re reminded of this thought quote from someone that you can’t shake. I remember a conversation like this from a few years ago, and it pops into my head from time to time.
I was speaking to a friend about a change he wanted to make in his life, a big one. As I listened, I could tell that he had already talked about his plan to others and that they had been less than supportive. He went on to tell me that some thought he was crazy for giving up his current way of life to pursue something that seemed like it could only end in failure. Then he said, with the confidence of someone who knew he could succeed, “It’s been done before by other people. So why not me?” To this day, when I’m deciding whether or not something is possible, I remember that. I lost touch with that friend and I honestly couldn’t tell you whether or not he succeeded. What I can tell you is that he will never wonder what could have been if he would have tried.
Succeed or fail, stepping out and trying something is usually worth it. I can speak to times in my life that I chose wrong when making a major decision, but I know that it would have eaten at me forever if I’d have never tried. Sometimes I even knew I probably wouldn’t get a good outcome, but I just couldn’t handle the idea of wondering and never trying.
“Why not me?” If someone has dropped out of college and started their own business, it can be done. If someone has gone to the moon, it can be done. If a dyslexic person has written a book, it can be done. If someone has climbed the tallest mountain on earth…it can be done. If it’s been done, it can be done. It just might be worth a shot.
